What is Stapling?

Hi, can you please explain to me what is the purpose of the Stapling function? The wiki does not explain this specifically.

Basically linking documents, folders, mails unders some group. Setting a relation between them.

For example invoce fielegrouped with xls file and project folder ( could be a classical example, files and folders could be in diferent taxonomy points )
