Best way to mass import documents

Hi,

What is the best way to import terabytes of documents at once? There is direct upload option in frontend which I don't think is a good option for bulk importing a lot of documents. And then there is Import option in Administration, which I feel should be the right way, please let me know if there is any other better option than this.
