Could OPENKM considered to be a EMC?

Hi,

Great product OpenKM. We've been testing and we defenitely say, it is amazing.
We have a question. There are many theories about DMS, CMS, ECM. We've been looking for information related to this. Taking in account some articles we've read, OPENKM could be considered a ECM because includes features of traditional ECM, workflow, etc., however it is not clear to me.

Alfresco could be considered a ECM, and I dont know if OpenKM could be considered as well.

I've been reading a lot of articles however it depend on the author. it seems like the boundary between the current DCM like OpenKm and the concept of ECM it is not clear.

Sorry my ignorance. Hopefully, I'll understand the difference between ECM and DMS concepts with your help.

Is quite difficult set a difference between EMC, DMS, Record Management, DAM ( Digital Aset Management ). EMC for my point of view is more near "marketing" reasons than real differences between almost document management solutions. All depends on what you understand about what should be EMC.

From my point of view EMC should have the feature to publish contents on a website. We've been done some experiments with joomla and wordpress to remotelly publish articles from OpenKM. Us we think the right direction is connect with classical Content management systems to publish from there the contents stored in OpenKM ( images / video / html text ). The experiment is still not finished because is stopped waiting for finishing sdk for php. Some ECM provides their own ( sdk / framework / frontend ) for publishing content. I think sometimes we are more near philosophical discussion caused by marketing ideas creators than real world. What is content, do you know something in your business day by day that could not be considered as content ( paper, database customer records, the secretary contacts lists, etc... ) ? Can consider if some aspect is not present in application then is not complete content management ? quite difficult answers this kind of questions. I'm catalan and in my language like spanish is clear the concept of document ( there's univoque relation between digitalized paper or word created as document, nothing else. But on english scenario document is also record in database etc... ( document is everything, every evidence in your business scenario ) here we some semantic problems ).

In neraly future when we will got finished first integration with content management app, then we will do marketing as DMS and ECM. We got a basic Record management Module and we're working to extend it, then we will talk about OpenKM Record Module what we're not doing marketing about it. In all cases keep in mind the basis of all is the same. Binary information stored in a repository and then explode in several ways ( webs, viewers, etc... ).

If in next years somebody creates new magic phrase you'll see everyone goes there, we change the name of the wheel and is something new, I want one, but really is the wheel. I suggest you focus the question in other terms, I got a problem. First understand it ( this is difficult ) and then explain the problem to some software solution provaiders to show you how they can help you. You'll discover the app name is not so important than the way to solve it. For us well solved problem always should be easy at end user eyes, otherside think it again.

Any comment is wellcome, I suppose the gurus of it will be disappointed with me, but I understand, theirs objective is philosophy about it.

Awesome Jllort. It is an excelent point of view. It is true, sometimes it is marketing in it self although, for example, as you say above, there are some features closer to conceptually pure EMC like for example uploading content directly to the website. I've been taking a look at Gartner trends for 2014. They talk about EMC specifically, so EMC could be a tendence. Customers usually ask about the difference. We can go with OpenKM however it is important to understand completelly details related to these differences between EMC, DMS, etc.. so that we could explain to our customers better and show OpenKM is the solution they need, because potentially it could be considered a EMC as well, if not just now, depending on the pure concept of understanding, in future releases of this product. We consider OpenKM could be a great solution as Alfresco, etc., for that we are trying to make clear every question about the features and try to introduce the product in a better way.

Actually we're working in tree directions:
1- content publishing
2- framework to build your own UI
3- more complete record management solution

Point 1-2 will be visible in 3-4 months, the last I think until ends 2014 will not be visible
