Is there a way I can retrieve information from the database using the SELECT element - similar to SUGGESTBOX.

Actually no, the suggest box is though as select in metadata database. As a future feature seems interesting and not much complicated to be implemented.

I have added in our roadmap http://issues.openkm.com/view.php?id=2107 if some customer demands it will have major priority than what has now, we are involved in other features and now is not critical to be implemented.
