Open Source Document Management System | OpenKM

Hello everybody,

I've just discovered this fantastic product. 100 times better than SharePoint! Well, maybe just 99 times better, because there's one thing I'm not quite sure.

I suppose when I want to edit an existent document, eg Word doc, I would right-click on it and choose "Check Out". But the document is in read-only mode. So when I save the document, I can't and I have to save it in other place.

Well, for me, it's OK. But I still find this a little non user-friendly. Have I done something wrong? Or is it a matter of configuration?

You only can edit documents that you have write permission.

When you edit document is locked for other users. But meanwhile we enable users can read it, that\'s the idea. Because could be more tedious if document is locked during serveral hours and you can not access it anyway.

When you check-in document ( or cancel checking ) you upgrade document version and document is unlocked for other users to write ( check-out )

Thanks for your reply. But I'm sure we have misunderstanding.

I don't think it's a matter of "write permission". I have the same problem when I'm logged in as the person who created the document. Anyway, in the "security" tab, I have a green tick in the write column.

OK, maybe let see things in this way.

In a normal CVS environment, when I need to modify a source file, the edition cycle is like this:
1. I check out the file
2. I edit the file
3. I save the file
4. I check in the file

Then in OpenKM, the edition cycle isn't the same. It's:
1. I check out the file
2. I edit the file
3. I save the file to another place first
4. I check in the file but I have to search where I've put it.

I don't know, is that something to do with Firefox/Internet Explorer?

With firefox and IE you can configure always the same place to be saved documents, it could help it on someway to find more fastly document you\'ve modified. Really when you check-out document -> donwload, you might not edit file, you might save and then edit file.

To solve it, we want to do some embeded edition, but now we can not still be done, we\'re waiting for some exciting open office enhancement not yet finished. When it\'ll be done we\'ll try to editing directly on OpenKM UI.

I've just found that in Firefox, if I choose to "Open" the document, the file is saved in user's "TEMP" folder. And it seems like something sets the file's READ-ONLY attribute to true...

I'm looking for something like SharePoint which could give user a seamless experience. Maybe because SharePoint is using WebDav and Internet Explorer supports WebDav while Firefox isn't.

Actually webdav is only available on OpenKM professional edition.
