How to have document in non read-only mode?

Hello everybody,

I've just discovered this fantastic product. 100 times better than SharePoint! Well, maybe just 99 times better, because there's one thing I'm not quite sure.

I suppose when I want to edit an existent document, eg Word doc, I would right-click on it and choose "Check Out". But the document is in read-only mode. So when I save the document, I can't and I have to save it in other place.

Well, for me, it's OK. But I still find this a little non user-friendly. Have I done something wrong? Or is it a matter of configuration?

TIA

The checkout idea is when users modifying documents ( checkout , and uploading blocked only for you ), can continue accessing to this document, downloading to view etc.... but only you can uploading ( change document ).

We think it\'s better than lock totally document meanwhile you\'er editing.

Also we\'re thinking on integrated OpenKM editing, but is still not yet done, because we\'re waiting some future Open Office enhancement.

Thanks for your reply.

But I don't know if you had misunderstood me, or if I misunderstood you.

But my question is: why "check-out" gives us READ-ONLY document? In CVS, we don't have this behaviour.
