Unable to send/receive email while notifying users

Hi,
I am working on OpenKM 6.3CE and I want to notify users via mail while uploading a document.
While uploading a document, I click on notify users, select the users to be notified and then click on upload
The document gets uploaded but email is not sent.
The users are currently being retrieved from Active Directory via LDAP.
Also, do let me know if anything needs to be done to receive the mail as well.
Could you please help me with this. Is there any specific configuration needed to be done.
