We tried to make OpenKM as intuitive as possible, but an advice is always welcome.

If I understood, you are asking if it is possible overwrite documents what already are present into the OpenKM repository. Is this your question?

You must checkout the document and then checkin ( this is the standard behaviour ). In professional edition from UI is automatically detected when using drag& drop feature and does the upgrade transparent.

checkout -> mark for edition ( only you will be able to change the document)
checkin -> upgrades the document

Also, it is possible extend REST methods creating a new one what does it automatically ( only for professional edition ).
